Our committee was founded in 1999 by a group of concerned women whose aim was to ensure a better future for their children and future generations through research into cures for cancer. We all know someone who has been affected by cancer and so we are passionate about continuing with our fundraising efforts to support such a worthwhile cause.
Each year we choose a different Cancer Research project to support and eight years on we have raised a total of over a MILLION POUNDS!
Every day 700 people in the UK are told they have cancer. Whilst these figures may seem overwhelming, together we can make a difference and we are, but it takes time, effort and money and your support.
Our founder and Life President Celia Abrahams has recently been diagnosed with Glioblastoma, a particularly virulent form of brain cancer. Celia continues to be an inspiriation to our commitee and we have decided this to raise funds to support a project at University College Hospital which aims to improve the survival rates for those diagnosed with Glioblastoma.
Glioblastoma is incredibly difficult to treat and cure because the tumour cells are very resistant to chemotherapy and other conventional therapies and many drugs cannot cross the blood brain barrier to act on the tumour.
Treatments can involve chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery, but all of these are acknowledged as palliative measures as they do not provide a cure. The survial rates for those diagnosed with Glioblastoma remain very low. The average survival time from the time of diagnosis of this illness without any teatment is 3 months.
We aim to raise funds to support innovative clinical trials at University College Hospital run by Dr Paul Mulholland and Professor Ian Tomlinson, both recognised as experts within the field of brain cancer research.
It is hoped that with further research survival rates for those diagnosed with Glioblastoma can be improved.
The Mothers & Daughter Committee are hosting an Awareness Fundraising Dinner to be held on Sunday 11th October 2009 at Quaglino's.
Whilst the motivation behind this event is a very serious one, we hope that the night itself will be one to remember for its entertainment, venue, excellent food, wine and atmosphereand of course, good company.
Tickets will be sold at £400 per couple and there will be a Silent Auction on the night.
Although we appreciate as a committee that these are economically difficult times, we will be working extremely hard this year to meet our target of £150,000 in order that the valuable and innovative project we are supporting can be fully funded.
